About FindSafetyStations
FindSafetyStations helps US drivers determine whether a vehicle safety inspection is required, what it covers and costs (with statute citations), and where to find an authorized inspection station. We are an independent informational site — not affiliated with any DMV, state police, or inspection contractor.
What we cover
- Priority state hubs: Hawaii PMVI, Missouri MVI, Maryland MSIS, Virginia official inspection, North Carolina safety & emissions
- Pillars for checklist, fail/retest, exemptions, motorcycle, trailer, transfer, stickers
- Tools: need-inspection quiz, cost notes, safety vs emissions, reminders
- Station and city directories enriched carefully — authorization from official lists where available
How we stay accurate
| Content type | Source hierarchy | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Rules / fees / cadence | Statute → admin code → manual → agency FAQ | Static files in repo |
| Authorized stations | Official locators/PDFs first | Static station JSON |
| Hours / photos / ratings | Optional Maps enrichment + OSS imagery | Static JSON + public/images/ |
| Contact / claim / reminder | User submissions | SQLite forms DB only |
Editorial standards
- State rules cite statutes, administrative codes, and official agency pages first.
- Station “authorized” flags require an official-list match — Maps categories alone never authorize a shop.
- Advertising and affiliates (if enabled) do not rewrite legal facts. See Advertising disclosure.
- Corrections: use Contact or List your station.
What we are not
- Not a government agency or official station locator replacement
- Not legal advice or a substitute for statute text
- Not an emissions-only directory (we deliberately separate VEIP / VIP / Gateway VIP)
- Not a pre-purchase inspection marketplace

FAQ
Is FindSafetyStations a government website?
No. We are an independent informational directory. We are not affiliated with HDOT, MSHP, MSP, VSP, NCDOT/NCDMV, or any DMV.
Do you perform inspections?
No. Inspections are performed only at authorized/licensed stations under each state’s program.
Where do fees and rules come from?
Primary sources: statutes, administrative codes, inspector manuals, and official agency pages. See Data sources for methodology.
Can stations claim or correct listings?
Yes — use List your station. Submissions land in a forms database for review, then approved changes are written into static station JSON.
Why might a Virginia station show as unverified?
VSP does not publish a bulk public safety-station list. We may seed discovery listings and ask you to confirm official inspection capability by phone.
How do I contact you?
Use the Contact page. Do not send passwords, payment card numbers, or government ID images.
