Texas safety inspection requirements

Effective Jan 1, 2025, Texas eliminated periodic safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles (HB 3297). Owners instead pay an Inspection Program Replacement Fee at registration. Emissions testing still applies in designated counties. Commercial vehicles still require safety inspections.

Non-commercial passenger vehicles no longer need a DPS safety inspection before registration. Commercial vehicles still must pass safety inspection. Vehicles registered in emissions counties still need emissions tests before registration.

Cadence: periodic safety inspection eliminated for non-commercial vehicles (effective 2025-01-01)

Fees: Non-commercial vehicles pay a $7.50 annual Inspection Program Replacement Fee at registration ($16.75 initial for qualifying new vehicles) under HB 3297—not a safety inspection. Emissions fees may still apply in I/M counties.

Fail / retest
