Which states require safety inspection
Last reviewed 2026-10-01 for FindSafetyStations coverage. This is not an exhaustive 50-state legal opinion — verify with each state’s official program. Several states have eliminated, suspended, or are phasing out periodic passenger safety inspections while emissions or commercial rules may continue.
How to verify for your vehicle

- Open your state hub below for cadence, fees, and official locator links.
- Confirm whether emissions is bundled or separate in your county.
- Use the requirement quiz if your situation is unclear.

FAQ
Does every U.S. state require annual safety inspection?
No. Only a minority of states run periodic passenger safety inspection programs. This guide covers FindSafetyStations’s curated state set — not all 50 states.
How can I verify requirements for my state?
Open the state hub, follow links to the official program page and statute citations, and use the official station locator. Do not rely on repair-shop ads alone.
Why are Texas, Louisiana, and New Hampshire listed?
Drivers still search these programs after repeal or suspension. We document primary-source status so you do not schedule unnecessary inspections.
What about emissions-only states?
California and others may require smog or I/M testing without a separate “safety sticker” program. Safety and emissions are different entities — see safety vs emissions tool.
