Safety vs emissions

Safety inspection checks mechanical roadworthiness (lights, brakes, tires, glass, etc.).Emissions checks exhaust/OBD compliance. Some states run both; directory searches must not mix them.

How to use this tool

  1. Find your state in the table.
  2. Read whether emissions is combined, separate, county-limited, or not applicable.
  3. When searching stations, use the official safety locator — not an emissions-only network — unless the programs are explicitly combined.

FAQ

Can one shop do both?

Sometimes. In combined programs (for example NYVIP or Mass Vehicle Check) a single visit may cover both. In separate programs you may need two different facilities or lanes.

Why do directories mix them up?

Maps search results often label any “inspection” shop the same way. Always match the official safety-program locator — not an emissions contractor site — when you need a safety sticker.

What about California Smog Check?

California’s Smog Check is an emissions program, not a statewide periodic safety inspection like VA/HI/MO. Treat it as a related entity, not a safety-station directory.
